Research And Planning - Music Video Prep.

Shooting test shoots

These shots were taken to test coloured lights on the video recorder and also to see if we could incorporate writing of words that appear in the lyrics of our song in our video.
unfortunately we could no use these shots, as they didn't go with the theme of our music video, we designed new images that fit in well with our footage.

Above show a variety of different screen shots of hip hop/rap music videos that fit in with our genre. the shots show the various things we will include in our music video such as people taking drugs and partying. this correlates with our strong use of drug reference. to create a sense of reality we've created make believe drugs using paracetamol to appear as illegal drugs. This makes the video more appealing and realistic to our target audience. Also it fits in well with our genre and links the lyrics and the footage together, as the artist speaks various times about drugs and partying.

Digipak Final &First Drafts

When creating our digipak, we decided we wanted our creation to appear as more of an art form rather than just a CD cover at first glance. In order for our CD cover to appeal to our target audience and connote the genre of rap/hip-hop clearly, the element of rap lies deliberately within the image we had taken of the artist rather than the album cover as a whole. Having the eyes blacked out corresponds with the drug-like/intoxicated state the artists track list appears to have and our music video gives off this same vibe. We made the decision of using female stereotypical colours - pink/purple - firstly to challenge the typical genre conventions. Also, this to us seemed like the best colour scheme to choose in order to show a psychedelic trance. This is also shown through the smokey effect layer under the main image. Ultimately we wanted our cover to be quite minimal and follow the colour scheme throughout so it doesn't look disjointed.
Instead of putting the track list on the back of the CD cover, our decision was to put it on the inside so it didn't become a distraction from the 3D effect we created with the artist. We also wanted to make the background shade on the inside darker to reflect the artists personality in his lyrics. The type of font we used for 'Travis Scott' was used to create a sharpie/signature feel as if the artist had written it himself giving the album a more personalised feel that the target audience can appreciate. The album name 'Wonderland' was initially taken from 'Alice in Wonderland' which ran controversy on the drug elements that it supposedly contained. Below is our final version.

Poster Draft & Final

The test shots.

We decided to use a Jay -Z poster as our style model because we liked the layout and the theme, also the way the artist is presented and styled in the poster, as its set out like a film advertise and we believe its appealing to the audience and sells the artist really well. To the right is our first draft, there is still a lot of work and things we need to include such as the artists name and the website. We liked the smokey purple layout be hide the main image, as purple is a contestant colour  through out our album, also the resemblance between the poster and the album is important for the target audience so they remember the artist.

Feedback on our poster:

'The writing could be a different colour, more creative.. try purple or grey..'

'Include the artists name and make the symbols at the bottom smaller'

'The purple tint should we throughout'

'The artists jacket blends in with my layout, makes the artist less visible, change colour scheme''

After receiving the feedback and working on new idea's for a while, our whole concept changed. below is our final poster for our artists. We changed the image to a close upshot because this shot magnifies the artist, showing very little background, we also added a distorted overlay effect which contrasts with the black and white effect and continues the intoxicated theme. We also added a girl in the background is a convention off the genre  to include a female in the background, also its adds sex appeal and attracts a wider range within our target audience.

Planning -Music Video Prep.

Crew List:

Throughout the planning, research, filming and editing a lll four members of the group contributed different skills towards our music video to the best of our abilities.

David:  Camera Man
Worked as the director of filming, he will be be hide the camera shooting. this involves flowing the planning and research and making sure everything we had planned to do was done and making sure it looked suitable for our target audience.

Talal: Director
Was responsible for directing the actors and actresses on each different location. he was also good with suggesting changes ti our ideas for out music video if something didn't look quite right.

Rhea &lisa-Marie =  Creative decisions
Will be working be hide the scenes peeping costumes, staging props and will also responsible for makeup. also suggesting how are artist should look and what he would be wearing whilst the rest of the group helped finalise the choice. also i was in the music video, so being on set, suggesting movements and actions of the extras in the video also helping with directions and costume.

STORYBOARD:

THE MORNING AFTER:

1. The artist wakes up, extreme close up shot of the artist face zoomed into eye.

2. Establishing shot of the setting, the artist walks into the kitchen, (bottles and cups everywhere, people passed out on the floor) natural lighting to portray it is the 'morning after'.

3. The artist walks over the people and gets cereal and milk and sits at the table.

4. POV shot of his iPhone showing explicit videos of the night before, they will be censored.

5. Tideo on the phone starts buffering, static/distorted effect and all of a sudden it becomes reality, in the form of a flashback.
-tone of music changes at 1.15

NIGHT BEFORE:

6. the next shot is in the same location(the kitchen) however it is night time, purple/red light, everyones conscious and interacting with each other as well as props.

7. the artist stumbles out of the kitchen and in to a bedroom, going down a hallway in slow motion reflecting the feeling of intoxication/hallucination. (this is where most of the effects will be placed)

8. girl has separate scene.

9. location changes to a bedroom, girl in bedroom with him, hes smoking and the party is faded behide him. close up shots of props.

10. words flashing on the screen, him travelling back to the living room where he started off.

11. Falls asleep.

Location List:

House/Bedroom

Kitchen/Living Room

Our final decision on which location to shoot at we went with a house, we decided to choose this because the music video is about a hues party also there are particular restrictions and difficulties when trying to film in a cub so initially a house became an easier option.

Using a house as our main locations means the setting of the house needs to be the same in order for our video to be constant throughout, without any changes through out the video, also lighting was another issue for us as difficulty faced us when purchasing a purple lighting for the night scene, we mind mapped and search for otter options such as laminated paper covering the light.

Also there will be alcohol and tablets present on set, whilst shooting the video as props, we need to ensure all members under 18 years old do not consume any also we are extremely careful and responsible when using props like this.

Representation in our music video

-Males- (main artist)

The artist (actor as travis scott) will be the main focus throughout the video. He will be represented as 'the man' in a masculine manner also a rebellious person. His clothing will reflect the urban street style but will appear wealthy due to his jewerly and setting. Also he will be represented as a careless party boy you will see this when he wakes up confused in his house with strangers laying around on the floor and furniture also by the variety off alcohol and drugs costumed and scattered around the kitchen and living area.

Females-

The females that will participate the creation of the music video will appear as 'extras' in the background. they will be represented as party girls involved with drugs and alcohol, also as sexual objects you will see this by the actions/movements (dancing, talking, partying), also by there clothing and camera angles/shots.

Teenagers:

The age group of participants in the music video will be teenagers 17-19. The teenagers will be partying, taking drugs and drinking showing there rebellious side, representing the negative and stereotypical side to teenagers of todays time frame. this will be appealing to our target audience due to similar age of the actors in our music video. Also, the video content will relate to our target audience as its very stereotypical for teens to be participating in house parties and gathering, for example you normally see this is american movies and hip hop videos.

Planning - Lighting

High Key Lighting – For the first half of the video we are going to use high key lighting as it will be a daytime/morning scene. We will use natural lighting from the window rather than use artificial lights or lamps. We want the first half to be realistic and very natural as if he just woke up from the night before. Due to the lighting and positioning of the camera, the audience will know that its the morning.

Low key lighting- For a second half the video, when the music becomes more upbeat, it will transform into flash backs off the night before (a night scene). we will use a combination off both low key lighting  and high key lighting. We want the style of lighting to reflect a party scene, to achieve this effect we are going to use red or purple official lighting. Also a combination of lamps/kitchen lighting.
