What is subculture?

In sociology, and cultural studies, a subculture is a group of people within a culture that differentiates itself from the larger culture to which it belongs. The subculture I initially wanted to create a music video for is the grime subculture of hip hop. Grime is a genre of music that emerged out of London, England in the early 2000's as a product of UK garage, dancehall, drum and bass and hip hop. Typically grime was played on Pirate Radio and was developed by teens of English, African and Caribbean origin.

initially my chosen artist was hip hop rapper Partynextdoor and therefore the subculture would of been hip hop, however due to the fact that my group had merged with a noter group that had a different taste in music we decided to select a different artist. The other group had decided that Grime MC Skepta would be there chosen artist so in order to reach a common ground we decided to chose up coming American rapper Travis Scott as our chosen artist. This was because the majority of Travis Scott's music had a similar energy, identity and vibe to grime music (which is still a subgenre of hip hop) despite being from entirely different backgrounds, additionally Travis' music features sounds that resemble R'N'B music, this is apparent in songs such as Grey,  Drugs You Should Try, Dance On The Moon and our chosen song, Hell Of A Night.

Subculture of chosen artist - Hip hop Subculture

The subculture of my chosen artist, Travis Scott, is Hip Hop. The Hip Hop genre emerged from the Bronx in New York City. Its roots are widely credited to the African American community; however, contributions also are credited to Jamaican American and Latino American communities. The Hip Hop lifestyle gained wi

despread and global popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, the lifestyle, music, lingo, and more have been so incorporated into the mainstream that hard-core adherents suggest the need to differentiate Hip Hop from Hip Pop.

The hip-hop subculture is a universal culture that promotes diversity among its audience. There is a union of ethnicities in this subculture that allows kids from Detroit to relate to kids in Hong Kong through hip-hop music. The hip-hop subculture has a great influence among teens of all ethnicities. Teens are persuaded through the hip-hop music to rebel against their parents and the status quo (society's expectations). This rebellion derives from teens feeling empowered and feeding off of this censorship. Teens like that the status quo and parents seek to censor this culture and they feed off of this censorship because its viewed as wrong and defies social norms.

Within Hip Hop itself there are many subcultures or rather sub genres such as trap, grime and boom bap. Travis Scott himself is from Houston and is heavily influenced by Southern Hip Hop and styles such as the 'chopped and screwed' style. Preceding the early 1990s, most Southern hip hop was upbeat and fast, like Miami bass and crunk. In Houston, a different approach of slowing music down, rather than speeding it up, developed. It is unknown when DJ Screw definitively created "screwed and chopped" music: although people around Screw have indicated any time between 1984 to 1991, Screw said he started slowing music down in 1990 and also in Tulsa Oklahoma Dj Dinero And Dj Z-Nasty helped popularize Chopped And Screwed music in the Mid South. There is no debate, however, that DJ Screw invented the music style."  He discovered that dramatically reducing the pitch of a record gave a mellow, heavy sound that emphasized lyrics to the point of almost storytelling. After messing around with the sound for a while Screw started making full length "Screw Tapes".
