Richard Dyer born 1945 is an English academic specialising in cinema. As of 2006, he is a professor of Film Studies at Kings collage London.
Richard Dyers star theory is the idea that icons and celebrites awe manufactured by institutions for financial gain. He believes that stars are constructed to represent 'real people' experiencing real emotions. Stars are manufactured by the music industry to serve a purpose; to make money out of an audience, who respond to various elements of a stars personally by uyinh records and becoming fans. Dyers theory can be broken down into three sections, these being:
1. Audience and Institution
2. hegemony
3. constitutions
Audience and Institutions: Stars are made to make money for that purpose alone. the institution them modifies the stars image around the target audience.
Hegemony: We realte to the star because they have a feature that we admire or share with them this develops from an admiration into idolisation. some people may attempt to replicate what they like about the star, nut this can be negative because even though stars are seen as role models, some abuse, hard core drugs and acholol can lead to people who worship these stars copying their actions.
Constructions: the star is built for an audience and is not an actual person. the star is built specifically with someone signature to them that differentiates them from other stars, e.g such a lady gaga and katy perry.
